Extractions / Surgical Extractions of Wisdom Teeth

At Smile Store, we do our best to avoid extractions where possible, but in some cases, there is nothing that can be done for your tooth.

From basic extractions to wisdom teeth extractions (even impacted teeth), we are well-equipped to perform these surgeries at our office.

All extractions at Smile Store are performed under strict standards of hygiene and sterilization.

1) Reasons for a tooth extraction

  • Severe decay and infection which has destroyed a large portion of the tooth and bone
  • Advanced periodontal (gum) disease- mobile teeth
  • Impacted wisdom teeth
  • For orthodontic treatment(braces) in case of forwardly placed teeth

2) What are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the final set of molars that you get after 18 years. In most people, they are misaligned or are impacted. In such cases, they can cause severe problems and repeated pain and swelling. Extraction of such teeth is then required.

We have a specialist Oral Surgeon who is an expert in wisdom teeth removal.

3) How do I know if I need a wisdom tooth extracted?

Below are some common symptoms associated with unhealthy wisdom teeth:

  • Repeated pain and discomfort around the tooth
  • Swollen or bleeding gums around the tooth
  • Swelling around the jaw bone
  • Adjacent good tooth is getting spoilt due to food lodgement around the wisdom tooth area

The day they give trouble It is better to get it out

4) The Extraction Process

  • We use a topical gel to Numb the surface area first so that you don't feel the prick of the Injection.
  • We use local anaesthesia which will ensure your tooth, jawbone and gums are all thoroughly numbed.
  • You won’t feel pain during an extraction, but you will feel some pressure.
  • It takes 30-45 minutes for an extraction.
  • We give stitches only if needed.
  • When your extraction is complete, we will give you a written instruction sheet.

It is important that you closely follow the post-extraction aftercare instructions to promote a healthy recovery.

6) Things you need to do after extraction or wisdom teeth removal

  • Remove the cotton pack after 1 hour. You do not have to replace it with any home cotton
  • Have plain vanilla ice cream. Avoid any nuts or brownies or chips in the ice cream as they can go inside the wound. Cold milk is also ok.
  • Please take the medicines after you eat the ice-cream. Do not skip the medicine dose.
  • Apply ice on the face from where the tooth was extracted. Apply ice only for the first 24 hours after extraction. It accelerates healing and reduces swelling.
  • You need to eat soft and cold food for 24 hours after the procedure. Food like dal rice, curd rice, khichdi, idli chutney and bread butter is allowed.

7) Things you cannot do after extraction or wisdom teeth removal

  • Do not spit outside for 24 hours. All your saliva and blood need to be swallowed. Do not spit outside as you can dislodge the blood clot.
  • Please do not eat anything solid for 3-4 hours. It takes a couple of hours for the anesthesia to wear off. You can have liquids, juices, coconut water in a glass.
  • Don't use a straw to drink liquids. You can use a glass. Straw creates negative pressure and can dislodge the clot.
  • Don't have hot or spicy food for 3 days
  • Don't talk till the anaesthesia wears off because you will bite your cheek or lip.
  • Do not brush on that day. You can brush the next day but please spit the water slowly.
  • Don't gargle vigorously as you may spit out the blood clot also.
  • Do not have crispy food like khakda, papad, nachos etc which will pierce the wound and cause fresh bleeding. Avoid such food items for 7 days
  • Smoking, Tobacco, Alcohol, Pepsi , Coke etc are not allowed for 7-10 days post extraction as they delay healing.
  • Don't apply any balm, volini or hot pad on your face.
  • Don't take Steam for 5 days.
  • Yoga, gym or any type of exercise is not allowed for 5 days.

8) Will there be any Swelling and pain post-extraction?

Swelling occurs in most cases but the amount varies depending on the position of the tooth. You need to apply ice on your face for 15 minutes in repeated cycles over the first 24 hours.

Swelling tends to decrease after 3-4 days but in some surgical cases will let for 7-8 days

Medicines will be prescribed depending on your case. We usually give an antibiotic and a painkiller post-extraction.

Pain and discomfort stay for 5 days and then gradually reduce.

Please start with warm salt water and gargle twice every day after 48 hours of extraction. This helps to keep the wound clean and accelerates healing.

You can call us anytime post-extraction in case you have any doubts or queries.

9) Brushing and Cleaning

After the extraction, avoid brushing for that night. Because spitting out is not allowed, that's why brushing is not allowed for 1st 24 hours.

Be careful not to brush over the wound where the teeth are extracted. You can resume gentle cleaning around the adjacent teeth.

Post 48 hours start with warm salt water gargles (a pinch of salt in a cup of water) after meals and before bed.

10) Replacement of Extracted teeth

Healing
After a tooth has been extracted there will be a resulting hole in your jawbone where the tooth was. Initial healing takes 7 days. Complete closure of the gums takes 21 days. Whereas bone formation takes 2-3 months to heal.

Replacement
Extracted teeth can be replaced with dental implants or bridge. For bridge placement, we can take measurements after 15-20 days post-extraction. It depends on the healing. For Implant placement, we can place it after 3 months post extraction. Once the bone is formed and the hole is closed. There are times when we can place the implant in the same appointment as extraction but this depends on the tooth and case.

Please see Dental Implants & Bridge section for more information.
