Metal braces or Traditional braces

Are you conscious of smiling because your teeth are out? Do you have gaps between your teeth?

Is this the reason you are reading this post? Metal Braces for teeth are the answer to your problems.

Child or adult, it works brilliantly in both. Braces can give a beautiful and healthy smile for life. Read on to clear all your questions.

1) What are metal braces or traditional braces?

The bracket and wire are metallic/ silver in these braces

Each of the braces gets a small rubber band around it. It holds the wire in the bracket slot. This wire causes the teeth to straighten out.

Braces (brackets) are the constant feature that will remain until the end of treatment. Wires and rubber bands change every month.

2) Damon or self-ligating braces?

Self-ligating braces are braces that don’t need rubber bands. They have clips on the brackets which are metallic.

  • They don't use elastics hence friction is low with these brackets
  • They use lesser forces thus less pressure
  • More comfortable for the patient cause of low pressure
  • Treatment time is shorter -They produce more expansion

Dr Jayshree Daryanani can suggest which one will work better in your case. Visit Smile Store to know more.

3) What is the right age to get my child checked for braces?

7 years or more is the right age to get your child for an orthodontic check-up. Reasons for a check-up

  • To check if permanent teeth are erupting in place. Sometimes milk teeth hinder the eruption of permanent teeth.
  • To check if there are growth problems in the jaws. These need treatment at a younger age.

Many times parents keep waiting till the permanent teeth to erupt and miss out on this golden age. A simple appliance can help the teeth in a big way.

4) Do metal braces or traditional braces hurt?

1st visit - You will feel pressure and not pain caused by the wire. The wire causes tooth movement.

Follow-up visits- Braces tightening may cause your teeth to feel sore & sensitive to the touch. This can last up to 2-3 days.

Drink something cold, such as an iced drink or milkshake. It can help relieve the pressure on your teeth and ease the soreness. Post that there is no discomfort. Remember, pressure is only temporary.

5) What is the Cost of Metal braces or traditional braces?

The biggest advantage of metal braces is that they are cheaper than clear or invisible braces. They are much cheaper than Invisalign also.

The cost would depend on many factors like

  • If you need extraction to push your teeth inside
  • Complexity of the case
  • Need of extra adjuncts to correct your teeth

It starts from Rs 40,000 and can go up to Rs 70,000. Self-ligating / Damon braces fall into the higher range.

We offer an instalment plan to allow gradual payment of the treatment fee. The treatment goes on for 12-24 months; you can make the payments during your treatment.

Braces treatment changes the teeth and face forever. It is thus important that an orthodontist carries out the treatment. Dr Jayshree has an experience of 10 years.

6) How regularly do I have to see my orthodontist?

You need to see your orthodontist once every 21-30 days. It depends on the type of tooth movement carried out.

We keep a watch on the dental hygiene of the patient as well at every appointment.

We are just a phone call away in case of any trouble.

7) What food can I eat with metal braces or traditional braces?

Stocking up on braces-friendly food before you even get your braces put on is most important. Your teeth will feel a little sensitive when you first get your braces put on and after adjustments also.

So opt for soft foods like rice, juices, idli, khichdi, soup, pudding, kheer, etc. Avoid hard or sticky foods that may cause soreness or pain.

Hard food also causes the loosening of wires or the breaking of brackets. Avoid foods like popcorn, caramel, nuts, carrots, panipuri, thin-crust pizzas, papad, ice cubes, sticky sweets, etc.

8) Do I need extraction of teeth for metal braces?

Most patients hold the idea that extractions of teeth are necessary for braces. With proper diagnosis and treatment planning, we can avoid extractions in many patients.

Dr Jayshree Daryanani recommends extraction only in severe cases.

Achieving a natural profile of the face and a healthy smile is the primary aim.

9) How long does the braces treatment take?

Treatment duration varies depending on the severity of the problems. It can range from 6 months to 22 months. On average, comprehensive orthodontic treatment takes about 1 year.

It will also depend on:

  • Maintenance of appointments by the patient
  • Brushing and general teeth care by the patient
  • Compliance with instructions during treatment

Don’t worry about the time because braces give you a natural smile. We don’t alter the teeth at all. So Go Ahead with the first step. The answer to your problems can come only after a consultation with Dr Jayshree Daryanani.

During the consultation, she will solve all your doubts.
